One of Italy's most important medieval signories, the della Scala family, ruled Verona for a little over a century and turned the city into a great power. What remained were numerous castles and palaces scattered throughout the territory.

The graves of the family represent an impressive grave monument. Three sarcophagi, which are protected by holy knights, form the side entrance to the burial chapel of the Scaliger family.
The sarcophagus of the Cangrande was built first and depicts scenes from his life and heroic deeds. The tomb of Mastino II was built while he was still alive. It is characterized by a high canopy decorated with typically Gothic eyelashes.
The third tomb, that of Cansignorio, puts the other graves of the family in the shade with the fine elegance of its decorations and the extremely splendid construction.

The small cemetery is very stylish.
Be sure to also visit the church next to it.
