As a reminder of the former Goitzsche opencast mine, the El 2 4-1296-100-B3 of the BKK Bitterfeld stands on the lakeshore near Bitterfeld
The 4-1296-100-B3 was picked up from Ferropolis on July 21, 2008 as a restored museum locomotive.
The DC-powered machines, also known as “hundred-ton locomotives,” are one of the most popular electric locomotive series in Germany. Around half of the locomotives were delivered to GDR companies. Buyers also included Bulgaria (206), China (186) and Poland (62). 245 machines of this type were delivered to the USSR between 1957 and 1970.
In Germany, in contrast to Eastern Europe and China, there are now only three examples of the original version in operational service in the Lusatian lignite mining area, where they are used in particular to de-ice the overhead lines in winter. Modernized locomotives of this type run at MIBRAG (partially modernized at the Profen opencast mine) and at Vattenfall in the Lusatian lignite mining area, referred to as EL2m.
