The flooding of the former open pit Holzweißig-West took place from 1993 to 2005. This created the Paupitzscher- and Neuhäuser lake on the Saxon side, as well as the Holzweißiger- and Ludwigsee in Saxony-Anhalt

The Ludwigsee originated from a former open pit mine. Since 2007, it can be officially used as a bathing lake, it was brought a lot of sand, and secured the embankment.
