Hops are of great importance in the south of Styria. The cultivation of the two cultures hops and wine has a long tradition and has developed into a regional identity. As early as 1824, the Agricultural Society began making first attempts at cultivation. Hop growing around Leutschach began after the Second World War, initiated by Peter Reininghaus, and is today the most important agricultural sector in southern Styria alongside viticulture. Due to the special microclimate, a special quality hop grows here, from which the contractual partner Reininghaus brews the special vintage pils. The main reason for the quality of the hops is the weather, followed by the cultivation techniques. The quality criteria of the hops are the bitter substances.
