Cascina Mandrugno and Rural Landscapes in Parco Agricolo Sud Milano

The Park constitutes a territorial entity of vast dimensions, extending practically across almost the entire southern semicircle of the Province of Milan.
The environmental values of the park area are those characteristic of the Milanese irrigated plain, intensely used by agriculture over the centuries, starting from the first reclamations carried out in the Middle Ages by the monastic orders.
The same agricultural works, including the complex of the irrigation network, the canals and fountains, as well as the hedges and rows, have fit perfectly into the landscape to enrich it with aesthetic and natural values.
In particular, the areas around the heads of the numerous fountains constitute valuable environments also for the defense of nature.
However, forests are rare, due to the intensive transformations of agriculture in recent decades.
The Park includes the Fontanile Nuovo and Sorgenti della Muzzetta nature reserves recently established by the Region, and the local parks of supra-municipal interest, such as Fontanili di Bareggio, Oasi di Lacchiarella, Parco dell'Addetta, recognized by the Region.
There are numerous historical-architectural emergencies, including the abbeys of Chiaravalle, Mirasole and Viboldone, the castles of Tolcinasco and Zibido, the Trenzanesio estate, the various rural centers and the system of large farmhouses.

The Mandrugno farmhouse is an agricultural farmhouse located in the territory of the Lombard municipality of Zibido San Giacomo, located west of the town center, towards Noviglio. Together with the nearby Femegro farmhouse it was an autonomous municipality until 1841. Mandrugno was an inhabited locality of the Milanese of ancient origin, and bordered with Viano to the north, Zibido San Giacomo to the east, Vigonzino and Conigo to the south, and Noviglio to the west. At the 1751 census the two farms recorded only 80 residents.

In the Napoleonic era, in 1805, the population had risen to 140 units, and in 1809 the municipal territory was expanded through the annexation of Viano and Vigonzino, but in 1811 the municipality was in turn annexed to Binasco; However, all the centers recovered their autonomy in 1816, following the establishment of the Lombardy-Veneto Kingdom, although they were moved to the Province of Pavia.

It was later the Austrian rulers themselves who recognized the need for a rationalization of the administrative network of the area, and therefore the municipality was definitively suppressed by the Austrians on 23 January 1841, being annexed to Zibido San Giacomo.
