Tips

  • In addition to astronomy, Fabricius dealt with meteorology, recording his weather observations in a "Calendarium" that has survived to this day. He examined a possible influence of the stars on the movements of the earth's atmospheric circle. In 1589 he produced the first Ostfrieslandkarte printed in Ostfriesland under the title "Nie und warhafttige Beschrivinge des Ostfresland".

  • The end of David Fabricius is somewhat curious and shrouded in mystery. He is said to have given a sermon shortly before his death in which he claimed to know a goose and chicken thief, but did not want to reveal his name. A self-created horoscope predicted disaster for May 7, 1617, and Fabricius spent the day at his house. In the evening he thought the danger was over and went for a walk. On the way he was killed by a farmer, Frerik Hoyer, with a peat spade. Hoyer obviously felt exposed as a thief and was angry about it. He was wheeled to death for what he did.Today a memorial in the Osteel cemetery and a sandstone plaque on the church in Resterhafe commemorate David Fabricius. The lunar crater Fabricius is named after him.Source :👇de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Fabricius

  • David Fabricius (* March 9, 1564 in Esens (East Friesland); † May 7, 1617 in Osteel) was a theologian, important amateur astronomer and cartographer. He discovered the variability of the star Mira and was the father of Johann Fabricius, who was the first to publish a scientific paper on sunspots in 1611.On August 3/August 13, 1596, Fabricius was the first to notice the variability of the star Omicron Ceti in the constellation Whales. This star varies in brightness with a period of about 331 days, being clearly visible at maximum and invisible to the naked eye at minimum. Because of this peculiar behavior he called the star in letters res mira, since Johannes Hevelius it has been called Mira, the "miraculous". Mira became the namesake of an entire class of long-period variable stars.
