The tree, named after the eight Beatitudes of Christ, gets its name from the fact that it originally had the exceptional number of eight tribes. Just before World War II, however, one diseased trunk was said to have been cut off, in order to prevent further contamination of the tree. According to another story circulating, poachers would have cut the trunk to avenge themselves on a ranger who had previously caught them.

The exact age cannot yet be determined with certainty, but it is estimated that its earliest existence dates from around 1850. The tree certainly already received mention in a work on Belgium's most remarkable trees from 1910.

In March 2013, the tree was severely damaged by a storm. In 2014 it was announced that the end of the tree is near.
