The beginning of the construction of Calvary falls during the Second World War. The arrangement of Calvary, started according to the idea of Archbishop Dr. Alojzije Stepinac, is undoubtedly one of the most significant ventures.

In that period, which can be considered the first phase of establishment, the Calvary was spatially - urbanistically fully formed, following the original concept of "Calvary in the open", that is, "on the hill". In 1941, the first four stations were established: I. Pilate condemns Jesus to death, II. Jesus receives the cross, III. Jesus falls for the first time under the cross and IV. Jesus meets his mother. The figural compositions of the mentioned scenes, on large pedestals, carved from Carrara marble, act from a distance as living scenes.

During the 1970s and 1980s, work continued on Calvary. The restoration of the old (1989) and the erection (1977-1990) of the remaining eleven Stations of the Cross lasted from 1977 to 1990. This was decided by the Archbishop's Committee and the Bistrica shrine with the vain pastor, while the artistic performance was taken care of by dr. Antun Ivandija. In the middle of the eighties (1984), a fountain with a statue of the Mother of God was also erected, placed in the middle of a meadow from which the ascent with the starting stations "Via crucis" starts. Like any living spring, at the same time a symbol of life and faith, the fountain soon became a favorite gathering place for pilgrims.

The main feature of the sculptural works performed on Calvary and on the fountain in that second phase of restoration is the fact that everyone of the order bears the author's signature.
