The chapel probably dates back to the 13th century and once belonged to the fortified estate of the Counts of Schwerin. Later, it was part of a castle belonging to the noble Hitzacker family, which was sold to the Medingen Monastery in 1336 and 1341.
The first documented mention dates back to 1318, and since 1396, it has served as the parish church for Gollern and Masbrock.
