Best Hikes to Schulte Family Burial Site, Burgsittensen

Tips

  • The Schulte family owned properties in the Börde Sittensen for many centuries. They lived in manors in Kuhmühlen, Vierden and Burgsittensen. Dietrich Schulte from Kuhmühlen initiated the construction of the St. Dionysius Church in Sittensen (1606-1613). The members of the Schulte family were then buried in a crypt in front of the altar in the church. In the second half of the 18th century, as part of the Enlightenment, many noble families relocated their graves from the churches to the great outdoors near their manor houses. The District Administrator Alexander Schulte (1741-1801) on Burgsittensen ordered that a decent place should be prepared for his funeral in the "Old Castle".
