The "Oberer Berggraben" hiking trail begins at the Amtshaus in Ilmenau and ends after approximately 18 km in Stützerbach. You hike on comfortable forest paths or shady forest paths and enjoy wonderful views of the valleys from benches. Last but not least, Goethe has left clear traces here in mining. Ilmenau needed significantly more water for his pounding and smelting plants than was available. Therefore, water was led to Ilmenau via a network of ditches and ponds. The Oberer Berggrabenweg was created by Miner von Utterodt 1688 - 1691.
