The Niepkuhlen in the Riethbenden nature reserve are part of a partially silted, swampy old Rhine channel that formed here after the Saale Ice Age. Back then, the Ur-Rhine flowed further west than it does today towards the Niers and Maas. After the last ice age, with the melting of the alpine glaciers, the Rhine shifted to the east, closer to where it is today.
