The stately knight's castle saw many owners: the Lords of Rieneck, the Hutts and finally the Lords of Thüngen, who turned the castle into a robber knight's castle.
This is where Götz von Berlichingen (his mother was born in Thüngen) also spent his youth in his uncle Neidhard von Thüngen.
In 1525, the Sodenburg was the only Franconian castle to survive the onslaught of rebellious farmers alongside the Marienburg Fortress (in Würzburg).
In 1608 the castle was pledged to the University of Würzburg, from 1660 it was no longer inhabited and fell into disrepair.
The basalt works were built in 1904 and the quarry was located below the Kilianstein ruins. Ultimately, the castle ruins were blown up as part of the crater expansion.
