Mountain Biking Highlight
Gunzenhausen is a town in the central Franconian district of Weissenburg-Gunzenhausen with about 16,000 inhabitants. The state-approved resort is located on Altmühlsee. Gunzenhausen is the destination or starting point of the Altmühlatal panorama path. By train the starting point or destination Kehlheim (Saal / Danube) is best reached.
Noteworthy sights include the Evangelical Church (St. Mary's Church), the Spitalkirche, the Catholic parish church of St. Mary and of course the medieval city fortifications, of which still a section of the fortification and three towers have been preserved: the Blasturm (15th century), the Därberturm (um 1300) and the stork tower (around 1450).
Remains of the Limes are to be found east of the city in Burgstallwald. A signposted hiking trail leads to a reconstructed palisade fence and a watchtower. The Altmühl promenade and the Altmühlsee are a popular recreational area in summer. These include the sports and leisure pools Waldbad am Limes and Solebad Juramare.
