The Donnersberg at Dannenfels is about 687 m above sea level. NHN the highest mountain range in the entire Palatinate. The highest point of the Donnersberg massif is at the top of the Königsstuhl rock formation.

From far away you can see the mast of a former US radio station and the transmitter Donnersberg on the forested mountain.

The Donnersberg rock consists of rhyolite, a volcanic rock. However, it was not a “real” volcano that brought magma to the surface and emitted it there. Instead, the magma masses got stuck below the surface due to their high viscosity.
It's called crypto-volcanism. It is a form of volcanism that takes place between surface and deep volcanism. The rising magma solidifies within the earth's crust, but close to the earth's surface.
