Haigerloch Castle is located in Haigerloch in the Zollernalb district in Baden-Württemberg.The original castle complex was first mentioned in 1095 and was probably located on the site of today's so-called Roman tower. The castle belonged to the Counts of Wiesneck and came in the second half of the 12th century in the possession of the Counts of Hohenberg. These built on the site of today's castle, a new additional castle complex. In 1381, the entire county including Haigerloch reached the Habsburgs. In 1497 she came through a barter against the rule Rhazüns in Switzerland to the Count Eitel Friedrich II of Zollern. After the zollerschen division of land in 1576 Haigerloch was the independent seat of a newly founded line of the Counts of Hohenzollern-Haigerloch. The new Count Christoph von Hohenzollern-Haigerloch had the castle expanded to the present-day extensive renaissance castle. The today's figure comes from the master builder Michael Beer. The castle church was at the same time also destined for the grave of his family branch, but already extinguished in 1634. In 1700 the new construction of the castle was added. In 1745, Prince Joseph Friedrich von Hohenzollern temporarily moved his residence from Vienna to the castle and provided for further construction. In 1784 he left the castle church baroque with much effort. The high altar, which was consecrated in 1609, is considered the most important work of Renaissance sculpture in Hohenzollern and has more than 60 wooden sculptures. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the castle lost in importance, so that it was largely spared by wartime destruction. Shortly before the end of the Second World War, a nuclear fission experiment was carried out in the rock below the castle church. Today, there is the Atomic Cellar Museum. The last time the castle was housed in 1975 was an agricultural and administrative school, then it was bought by a businessman. Since then, the castle has operated a hotel with restaurant and a cultural and congress center. The former castle church is today the parish church of Haigerloch St. Trinitatis.
