Fort Vuren is a fort that forms part of the New Dutch Waterline, and is located in Vuren in the municipality of West Betuwe in the Dutch province of Gelderland. The fort was built in 1844 on the Waaldijk, it served to protect Gorinchem and to prevent the enemy from moving west. In 1847-1849 a bombproof tower was built on top of the fort. A moat was dug around the tower, after which it was only accessible via a drawbridge. In 1873-1879, the bomb-free tower was partly demolished, because it was too fragile. The top floor was removed and the counter-carp gallery was added. The tower fort, the counter-carp gallery and barracks housed up to 420 men and 30 guns. Source Wikipedia
