    The Damavand with its 5604 m far surpasses all surrounding mountains and is thus the highest mountain of Iran and the entire Middle East. He is one of the highest freestanding mountains in the world.

    According to Iranian mythology, the dragon Zahak ruled the land for a thousand years, until Fereydun captured him and nailed him to a cliff face on Damavand, where he must live until the end of time.
