The protection area located between Stukenbrock and Augustdorf and adjoining the Senne military training area is characterized by the box valley of the near-source oil stream, its dry valley adjoining the source area, as well as by large-scale pine forests and isolated open heath and sandy grasslands.
A special feature of the upper Senne are the dune fields, which are significant in the protected area, which are among the oldest inland dunes in northwestern Germany and can also be found in the neighboring nature reserves Moosheide and "Dry valleys, box valleys and dunes of the upper Westerholter Bach". The dunes, which are up to twelve meters high, were created mainly by wind drifts during the Vistula cold period, when the Senna sand was whirled up due to a lack of protective vegetation cover and deposited again at another place. However, younger dunes were also caused by human influences, such as deforestation, the cultivation of fields and the plowing of heathland.
