Together with Galloway cattle, the Koniks serve to preserve the landscape on the Geltinger Birk. They cope well with the humid climate of the coast and are therefore kept outside all year round.

The first group of eleven Koniks was released on the Geltinger Birk in 2002. In 2006 a second group was added, consisting of one stallion, six mares and three yearlings.
