The name of the iron mountain is a reference to the past of the area. For almost 1,000 years, the area around Saalfeld was known for silver, copper and iron mining. On the way up to the summit cross of the Eisenberg at 636 meters above sea level, you will pass former mining sites and heaps. From here you have a wonderful view of the northern foreland of the Thuringian Forest.
