After the catastrophic flood of 1882, the city administration decided to abandon the old location on the Main and develop a new, higher area. Neu-Wörth was created. But the people never gave up the old place. They were too deeply rooted in the shipping town. The persistence ultimately led to the medieval city being preserved as a pearl on the Bavarian Lower Main. The flood protection, completed in 2001, not only protects people, but also helps preserve the historical ensemble. It enabled new generations to settle again and bring the city back to life.
