The Federsee near Bad Buchau in Upper Swabia (Biberach district) is the second largest lake in Baden-Württemberg with an area of 1.4 km². [2] It is located in the middle of the 33 km² largest contiguous moor area in southwest Germany and is the remainder of what was once a much larger post-glacial lake that covered around 50 km². This complex of lake and moor today represents the core of the geological Federsee Basin, which after renaturation measures, with its former banks and islands, is now of paramount importance in terms of natural and cultural history.

Today's basin landscape is now primarily a model for the ecological restoration of a natural landscape that has already been largely destroyed, including its botanical and zoological habitats and the associated safeguarding and research of ancient cultural products that have existed since the mid-19th century after the lake level fell and drainage the moors came to light and are now partly a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Federsee and the moor / reed surrounding it in the central basin are now protected in an area of 23.76 km², i.e. more than two thirds, the area also bears the title “European reserve” as a nature and European bird sanctuary “Federseeried” and has been included by the European Union in its "Natura 2000" network of protected areas.

Very nice bike path in the middle of nature.
Especially on weekends, however, it is heavily frequented by pedestrians and cyclists. Opposing consideration is the order of the day.

This long boardwalk takes you safely across the Federsee Moor, one of the region's most important nature reserves, home to over 250 species of birds and around 70 species of butterflies.

Bann forests are self-imposed total reserves and retreats for many endangered animal, plant and fungal species.

Here cycling is prohibited, so on foot.

Very crowded on Sundays, pedestrians and cyclists.

Nice market place and with consideration for the pedestrians, crossing the boardwalk is also really fun. Please take this notice seriously, not that the path will be blocked for us cyclists

No matter what time of year, whether by bike or on foot, nature is incredibly beautiful here.

From the jetty you have a beautiful view of the vegetation in the silt zone at Federsee.
