It is believed that in 1316 after the founding of Old Traki, the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was later moved from Kernavės, before this title moved to Vilnius. When Old Trakai lost its importance, Vytautas transferred his native castle to the Benedictines in 1405 and built a church here, and in the 16th century in the second half, a new monastery and church were built for the monks, which burned down in 1757. The reconstruction works continued for a long time, but before they could be completed by the tsarist authorities in 1845. the monastery was closed. The unfinished building was used by the parish of Old Trakai. Only in the 19th century. in the end, permission was obtained for the construction of a new church.

Senieji Trakai reminds a traveler interested in the country's past and culture of one of the oldest monasteries in Lithuania - 1405. Here, in his native castle, the Grand Duke of Lithuania Vytautas housed the Benedictines invited from Tynec near Krakow and built a church for them nearby. 1577 the church was rebuilt, a monastery was built. After 1757. fire in 1780 a wooden church was built (dismantled in 1905 and moved to Paluknis, where it burned down), in the 18th c. At the end of the 18th century, a brick building of the monastery was erected, which in 1845, when the monastery was closed, went to the rectory, and the monks were moved to Nesvizh at that time.
