The vast forests of Wermsdorf, rich in game, inspired Elector Christian II to build the first hunting lodge on the site of the old manor between 1607 and 1610. This was kept very simple and was therefore soon on the orders of the Elector Johann Georg I from 1617 to 1626 in the style of the German Renaissance and expanded. Master builder Simon Hoffmann gave the castle its current appearance. Three irregular wings form the courtyard, numerous gables effectively enliven the facades and special ornament is a bay window with ornate sandstone works. An octagonal stair tower with lantern and curly hood separates both main wings.

Because King Albert so often stayed in Wermsdorf and was so popular, decided the local Saxon Military Association with its chairman Oberpfleger Gustav Wagner to set him a monument. In May 1907, the military association submitted a motion to the municipal council. This found great approval among the inhabitants of Wermsdorf and the surrounding area. The German Kaiser Wilhelm II gave the military association a bronze gun barrel for the construction of the monument.
