The castle of Las Roquetas or Santa Ana was built between 1501 and 1522 to protect this point of the coast from attacks by Barbary pirates. Most of the building that we see today is a reconstruction since it was destroyed by the 1804 earthquake, with only the artillery bastion built in the 17th century remaining standing.
