Hailes Castle, managed by Historic Environment Scotland, stands on the south bank of the Scottish River Tyne. The initial structure of a fortified tower house was probably built by the de Gourlay family before 1300, making it one of the oldest constructions of its kind in Scotland. The de Gourlays lost the castle in the mid 1300s and it passed to the Hepburn family who rebuilt it. in the 16c the castle passed into the hands of the Stewarts, then the Setons. An attack by Oliver Cromwell’s forces in 1650 effectively ended Hailes’ days as a noble residence.
The castle is predominantly 14th century and the major remaining works is the West Tower.
