Ahrensburg Castle with its four striking corner towers and the moat was built by order of Peter Graf Rantzaus around 1585 in the Renaissance style as a triple house. The Rantzau family lived here until 1759, when the Danish treasurer and later feudal lord Heinrich Carl Schimmelmann bought it. This underwent structural changes to the taste of Rococo and early classicism.
The Schimmelmann family lived here until 1932, and since 1955 the castle has been open to visitors as a museum.
Today the castle is a unique testimony of Schleswig-Holstein noble culture, which shows precious interiors with valuable paneling, parquet floors, stucco ceilings, exquisite furniture, paintings and Meissen porcelain.
