South of Leipzig near Borna is the Bockwitzer See. Like the neighboring Harthsee, it belongs to the “Leipziger Neuseenland”. This refers to the post-mining landscape that is still being created in part and is part of the Central German Lake District. The Bockwitzer See was named after the excavated town of Bockwitz.

The Bockwitzer See was created as a post-mining landscape near Borna, south of Leipzig, from the former brown coal opencast mine Borna-Ost/Bockwitz, which was flooded by rising groundwater from 1993 to 2005. The lake was named after the devastated Bockwitz estate.Source: Wikipedia
