It's exciting how and where you can find evidence of the remains of times long past. In the Middle Ages, Elmdorf Castle stood on this hill. It was probably built as a moth facility in the 9th century. This is a special construction made of wood on a specially designed hill. A few information boards explain the history of the castle to you at this location.

Would combine this in connection with a bike / hiking tour around the Zwischenahner Meer. There is a 12km bike / hiking trail (gravel) through forest-like nature. Refreshments numerous available. In the town of Bad Zwischenahn there are plenty of shopping opportunities and a beautiful spa garden with an old windmill. In the town of Rostrup there is the "Park of the Gardens", where the local nurseries have established the design possibilities of gardens. For every garden lover is the duty.

Especially this part around the Zwischenahner sea is scenic.

Excavations confirmed the existence of the complex - plaques provide information:
Three mountains used to be Dreibergen castle hills. "Three mountains" rise conspicuously in the town of the same name on the north shore of the sea. Some people have probably already wondered about the hills. They are - this is proven by excavations by the archaeologist Dr. Dieter Zoller - more than just simple surveys. In the middle of the 12th century there was a castle complex belonging to the Counts of Elmendorf. Information boards present the history.
Dr. Dieter Zoller assumed that Elmendorf Castle developed from a fortified aristocratic court that was destroyed in the 10th century. This was followed by the construction of a tower castle on a flat hill, which was destroyed in the first half of the 12th century. This farm and castle complex was built around 1150 by filling up the large, ten meter high hills with a new complex. Son and architect Dirk Zoller created several reconstruction drawings from the finds, including ceramics, a folding scale, bronze brooches, a horse bridle and a dragon chandelier. From the middle of the 12th century onwards, several residential and farm buildings for the castle household stood on the flattest hill. This hill was connected to the main hill by a drawbridge. The actual castle was located on top of it - a 12-sided, mighty half-timbered residential tower. Another bridge connected the castle to the western hill on which there was probably an observation tower. The entire complex was surrounded by ditches.

Little is known about the ownership structure. The castle originally belonged to the counts' bailiffs in Ammerland. Count Eglimar II of Oldenburg (1108 - 1142) gave his daughter Beatrix in marriage to the noble Friedrich von Anvorde. He took over the castle. In 1243 Abbess Gertrud von Anvorde bequeathed her goods to the Hude monastery. In 1331 the castle came back into the possession of the Counts of Oldenburg through an exchange. After that, the Motte Elmendorf lost its importance and gradually fell into disrepair

This "three-hill castle" is located in a nature reserve on the shores of the Zwischenahner Sea. There are stairs leading up to the hills.
