    The Hermitage Bretzenheim between Bretzenheim / Nahe and Guldental, five kilometers north of Bad Kreuznach is a hermitage, which is the only rock monastery north of the Alps. In prehistoric times, it was probably carved into the rock as a pagan place of worship and was used as Mithraeum in Roman times until the 5th century. It experienced a Christian rededication in early Christian times, probably from the 6th to the 8th century. It is first mentioned in documents in 1043 in the form of an altar dedicated to this time. The church, which dates back to that time, and later a church, which fell victim to a landslide in 1567, no longer exist today, in contrast to the Felsenwohnung, which is still accessible today. It has a size of about 90 square meters and was used at times as a convent of a monastery or hermit as a dwelling, of which the last died in 1827 at the age of 82 years.
