The Kuhturm was first mentioned in 1538 and is located in the old town of Burg in the immediate vicinity of the historic city wall. The tower is popularly known as the Kuhturm because the farmers in the upper town drove their cattle to the pastures of the “Unterm Hagen” field.
The Freedom Tower served as a prison until 1910, then as a homeless shelter, youth hostel and finally as an animal shelter.
Hard to believe, but the actual gate is two meters below today's street level. Today the tower serves as an exhibition space for the Burger Heimatverein Burg und Umgebung e.V.
