The crumbling ruins of Melrose Abbey are an impressive site. Founded by David I in 1136 for the Cistercian Order, the abbey is a beautiful example of early masonry work. In 1385, Richard II's army destroyed most of the abbey. It is also thought to be the resting place of Robert the Bruce's heart, one of Scotland's national heroes. The monastery ruins are located in the middle of the small town of Melrose under the administration of the Historic Scotland Trust. Opposite the abbey is a paid parking. If you turn left in front of the abbey by car and then turn into the next street after about 200 meters you will have free parking lots.

      Opening hours:
      01.04. until 30.09. from 9.30 to 17.30
      01.10. until 31.03. from 09.30 to 16.30
Admission for adults is 5.20 pounds.

There is a German audio-guide tour, for which no additional fees apply. I would really recommend this audioguide tour for the ruin tour of the actual abbey: very atmospheric description of the history of the abbey.

Next to the abbey is still a museum. The museum visit is included in the entrance fee.

You will have to pay to get access to the abbey but it is really nice to walk inside and around it.
