State capital of the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate and at the same time its largest city. Mainz is the start or end point of the Main Cycle Path. Among other things, the city is known for the headquarters of ZDF and of course it is the hometown of the Mainzelmännchen.
Already at the last ice age hunters rested here 20.000 - 25.000 years ago. Much later, Mainz became episcopal city and electoral residence city. As a result, there is much to discover and you should spend a little more time planning your stay.

Mainz's old town is characterized by its eventful history. It becomes visible when you look at the medieval cathedral, the old patrician houses, the electoral palace, the winding streets and picturesque squares. In addition, the modern buildings - the town hall by the Danish architect Arne Jacobsen from 1971, the Brand shopping center, the Rheingoldhalle and Fort Malakoff - bear witness to the changing times.
History and culture, prosperity and decline of the last 2000 years are reflected as you walk through the old town. The city of Mainz has its origins here, bounded by the course of the former fortification ring, which ran from the Kaisertor in the north via today's Kaiserstrasse and the main train station to the citadel in the south. "Mogontiacum", "Aurea Moguntia" - the old city names and names still live on today in the memory of the former capital of Upper Germania of the Roman Empire.
War and destruction have repeatedly affected Mainz over two millennia - most severely in the years between 1942 and 1945 during the Second World War. At that time, almost the entire city area was in ruins. Today much of it has been lovingly rebuilt and restored. It's lively on Augustinerstrasse, along the banks of the Rhine or on market days in front of the impressive backdrop of St. Martin's Cathedral.
