There are two tunnel holes in the north wall of the quarry. There is speculation about the formation of the tunnels. They were probably created towards the end of the Second World War and were intended to serve as bomb-proof secret facilities for the relocation of war-related industries. With the liberation of Großbothen by American troops on April 12, 1945, however, this project was stopped before it was completed.
