In the vicinity of Bad Schmiedeberg lies the "Virgin Grave" Margarete Christine von Glasenapps from Bad Düben, who was raped and murdered in 1637 in the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War at this point by Swedish mercenaries. The tombstone says: "Where mermaids and elves listen, where pine tops rustle, I found my early grave. Stand, Wanderer, still and pray, here lies the Margaret Christine von Glasenapp ".
