Best Hikes to Landeskroner Weiher

Tips

  • The pond is very clean and invites you to linger and swim in the summer.
Many people complain that the A45 motorway bridge disrupts the landscape or is too loud.
I can't quite confirm that, it's rather unusual for a swimming pond, but it also has that certain "something" and makes the pond located in the middle of the forest a bit more "urban".
For me this is absolutely not a negative point.

  • The Landeskroner Weiher is a reservoir near Wilden, a district of the municipality of Wilnsdorf in the Siegen-Wittgenstein district in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The pond is at a height of 372.1 m, is around 230 m long, up to 70 m wide and has a water area of almost 13,500 m² (1.35 ha).[1] The pond is fed by the Wildebach, which flows in at the eastern end and flows out again at the western end. However, the original course of the stream only coincides with the pond for around 200 m.[1] The water movement keeps the water cool even in summer. The pond has been a popular summer excursion destination for years. The Wildener Fishing Club and the DLRG Siegerland have a hut on the bank. The association also invites you to celebrate at the pond on May 1st every year. At the eastern end, the federal highway 45 has been running over the pond with a bridge since the 1960s.

So that ore extraction and processing in the Landeskrone mine could work faster and more effectively, a dam was built in 1890 to dam the Wildebach.[2] On the morning of November 24, 1890, the pond's dam burst after days of rain. The fields and meadows of middle and lower game were devastated and the winter harvest was destroyed. Farmhouses, sheds and stables were destroyed and swept away. The level of the Wildebach rose to an additional meter.[3] Oberwilden was spared from the floods because it was located in the valley of the Kleiner Wildenbach, a side valley of the Wildebach.
