In winter 2005/06, a 660 m long side arm was built around the weir at the Rupperswil-Auenstein power plant. The inlet structure regulates the flow rate to 2-4 m3 / s. The main part consists of a natural channel between 7 and 20 m wide. In it there are alternately flat pebble rapids, as spawning grounds for fish and deep water areas as actual walking corridors. In between are deep pools, which serve the fish as resting areas. The islands are resting places for waterfowl. This new stream is a retreat for fish.
The side arm was supplemented by a fish pass, which created the Rupperswil-Auenstein power plant in the winter of 2009/10 as a climbing aid from the turbine outlet into the bypass.
At the upper end of the fish pass there is a counting chamber for monitoring fish migration. In the time when no fish are counted, the event itself can be followed by special observation windows in the fish pass and in the bypass water.
