A church existed in Heiligenstedten as early as the 9th century as one of the oldest church foundations north of the Elbe. It was probably related to Esesfeld Castle, which was also built in the 9th century. The current church building dates from the end of the 13th century; It received its present appearance through renovations in 1580. In 1826 the church, which until then had been on a dike in the outer dike, was diked. The church is still a few steps lower than the entrance.

The church is one of the cultural monuments of the community of Heiligenstedten, including its furnishings, bell chair, churchyard and churchyard grille.
