'Wipbrug' near Spanbroek, a movable bridge
Age-old bridge popular with walkers
Problems with traffic arise where land and waterways intersect. Over the centuries, practical and cost-effective solutions have been sought in the form of bridges, ferries, overpasses and raft bridges in all kinds of ways. Sometimes this has led to a picturesque result, such as the age-old seesaw bridge on the Wipbruglaan in Spanbroek. It is also one of the most beautiful places in West Friesland for the many hikers who do the popular 'Rondje Wipbrug'.
Medieval castles already had a drawbridge over the moat, which could be retrieved if enemies were approaching. That gave extra security, but it took a lot of power. By using a counterweight, the bridges could be operated by one man with a light hand gesture.
You will find a seesaw bridge at 'Onder de boompjes' in Hoorn, and a double seesaw bridge at the Dromedaris in Enkhuizen.
