The Faro of Maspalomas was built from 1861 to 1889 and is 56 meters high. Initially, the beacon device was still operated with petroleum. From 1906 she was electrified. In 2005, he was declared a Historic Monument (Bien de Interés Cultural) by the Government of the Canary Islands.

The Maspalomas Lighthouse stands on the south side of Gran Canaria in the centre of a stretch of coast that is one of the most visited holiday areas in Europe.
But Maspalomas is not only famous for its extensive dune landscape by the sea and its wonderful climate, but also for the old lighthouse that was already here when the first tourists unpacked their suitcases and the coast gradually turned into a popular holiday destination. Since the first visitors realised that the good weather here was a "daily routine", the Maspalomas Lighthouse has counted thousands of sunny days, honeymooners, bathing pleasures and beach walks.

The construction of the lighthouse was decided in 1861 and construction work dragged on for
28 years. At that time, this stretch of coast was a lonely, uninhabited area that was not even connected to the rest of the island by roads or paths.
To build the 55-metre-high lighthouse, a quay was built with a small ramp so that the building materials could be brought in by sea.

The lighthouse's light was lit for the first time on 1 February 1890.
It was the only structure to stand at the end of the long sandy beach that begins where Playa del Inglés is today and extends to near the palm oasis of Maspalomas. The lighthouse served as a guide for the steamers that travelled the transatlantic route from Europe to Africa and America.

The area around the lighthouse has since changed a lot. It marks the start of a lively area with numerous restaurants and shops, the perfect place to do some shopping, take a break after a day at the beach, go out to eat or just sit down and have a drink in peace and quiet on a terrace overlooking the sea.
