Cotton is mainly grown in the river valley of the Syrdarja, as here in the village of Dehmoy. Cotton needs a lot of water, which is taken from Syrdarja in bulk. However, the ecological consequences are devastating. The Syrdarja is one of the tributaries of the Aral Sea. Too much water was taken from the river through the reservoirs and huge irrigation systems, and the Aral Sea is now almost dry and has broken up into several smaller lakes.
