It's a shame that there is no longer any access. The remains of the wall give an idea of how impressive the former customs castle was.

It was a double moated castle, as the two brothers Hartwig and Heinrich Maltzahn had a terrible falling out. The upper wall was called "the right castle", the lower wall "the outer castle". Both had their own gates and bridges to the land route! The upper part was partially destroyed when the Tollense was straightened. Unfortunately, the remains of the foundations can no longer be viewed today because there is no access to them and everything is overgrown!

How long does it typically take to explore Burg Osten?

As a ruin, Burg Osten can be explored relatively quickly, perhaps within 30 minutes to an hour, depending on your interest in history and photography. However, if you combine it with a walk along the Tollense Valley or explore the surrounding natural features, you could easily spend a couple of hours or more.

Is Burg Osten accessible during winter months?
