Craggy and perfectly positioned, if it’s views you’re after, hikes up Struie Hill won’t disappoint. Sitting above Dornoch Firth in the north of Scotland’s majestic Highlands, this is the best place to get an overview of this winding river and the estuary mouth.

You can start your hike to the south east, parking at the end of a minor road from Edderton and approach along a farm track until you get onto the hillside. Boggy terrain is common, giving way to drier, heather and grass moorland. Ascending from the south allows you to pass between crags and hides the true extent of the views until you reach the summit radio mast.

From the 935-foot (285 m) top, the views west along the firth are stunning. Dun Creach hill fort draws the eye as it seems to spring from the water as the river unfurls around it, moseying off into the mountainous depths. East, the mouth of the firth opens up to the North Sea, with Dornoch Firth Bridge stretching across the yawning gap.

Hike year round, taking care if ice and snow are present in winter. Frost transforms the scenery and each season brings its own magic.
