Hiking Highlight

In the south of Scotland’s wild Ardnamurchan Peninsula, hikes up Ben Hiant provide an opportunity for excellent short walks with disproportionately good views. At just 1,732 feet (528 m) and with grassy, easy-going terrain, this is a highly achievable hill that still has a mountainous feel.
Parking on the verge on the B8007 to the north east offers the most popular starting point. From here, a clear trail can be picked up after a small pathless section. Unobstructed views of the hill propel you onwards up the steeper section with rocky outcrops occasionally appearing on Ben Hiant’s grass-covered body.
Reaching the summit trig point, the hill’s strong appeal is immediately clear. From this mini-mountain, gaze across to the isles of Oronsay and Carna in Loch Sunart. South, you’ll be greeted with sights of Tobermory and Mull stretching to the horizon. North west, spy Muck, Eigg and Rum. Hiking up Ben Hiant very much feels like you’re on a mountain and the blend of vibrant green hills and sparkling water in every direction give this region an otherworldly atmosphere.
Ben Hiant is the perfect peak for people looking for superb views, but not wanting to endure a leg-aching climb to reach them. The hilltop is still quite steep, but it's relatively short-lived and features a grassy, easy-going terrain.
The views from the top reach as far as the Small Isles, Mull and Skye, Loch Sunart and Loch Teacius, and the hills of Morvern.
