The “Höhfeldplatte and Scharlachberg” nature reserve is located in the Main valley above the Thüngersheim vineyards on the barren soils of the Muschelkalk. The Höhfeldplatte was declared a natural monument as early as 1940. The dry grasslands and forests became a nature reserve in 2002. A special feature on the Höhfeldplatte is the steppe heath forest. This complex habitat is a very sparse pine forest that grows on a special type of poor grassland. Due to the slight shading of the poor grassland, numerous orchid species thrive here in large numbers. Many different types of orchids can be admired from May to July along the specially designed path on the dry grassland of the Höhfeldplatte.
