View from Bulbarrow Hill

Hiking

5.0

(3)

One of Dorset’s most beloved high points, Bulbarrow Hill is a prominent landmark for miles around, thanks in part to the radio towers on its summit. It shrugs off these intrusions to reward visitors with a lovely panorama which takes in the counties of Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire and Devon.

The towers are not the first human influence on the hill. Bulbarrow Hill is named for the barrows that are found here and it was also the site of an extensive Iron Age hillfort; its embankment and ditch remains still attest to this ancient history.

A popular and historic hill on the chalk escarpment of the Dorset Downs

At 899 feet (274 m), this is not an ascent that will challenge experienced adventurers, but it rewards with beautiful views nonetheless. It looks out across the lush green of Blackmore Vale and patchwork fields to the north and across the scarp of the Downs to the east and west.

There are a number of ways to approach the hill’s summit. Perhaps the finest utilises the Wessex Ridgeway, a 136-mile (219 km) long-distance trail, which passes the top immediately to the north. By following the Ridgeway to the northeast you can also visit Bell Hill and Shillingstone Hill too.

Bulbarrow Hill’s top is not at the centre of a network of trails but rather the meeting of three roads, which makes its views accessible to wheelchair users. The escarpment is also popular with road cyclists, though it’s a tough slog to the top of the hill.
