      The Memmingen Zoller Garden 1775

The older history of the Zoller family is closely linked to Feldkirch, where some of its members worked as master builders and councillors for centuries. In the second half of the 16th century, two brothers moved to Memmingen to work as merchants. Their outstanding social position is documented in marriage politics, sovereign rights, houses and gardens.

In 1722, Joh. Ulrich Zoller and his brothers Georg Wilhelm, Joh. Clemens and Georg Zoller were raised to the nobility by Emperor Charles VI. In 1774, Privy Councillor Johann Jacob von Zoller bought a garden (with "spring water") behind the town hall on the northern city wall that had probably already been used by his family.

In 1775, the "orange gardener" Johann Georg Buder provided plans for a redesign of the garden based on the French model with various fruit trees (pears, apples, plums, cherries, etc.). Also in keeping with the taste of the time, a two-story, heated garden house was planned, the ground floor of which could be used as a greenhouse in winter. After the Zoller family died out, the garden, which had already been redesigned several times, became the property of the city in 1908 by will. Today, the Zollergarten is a place of rest in a central location with beautiful old trees. The small garden house was converted into an office by the Memmingen Fishermen's Day Association in 1995/96.
