Texola used to be called Texokla, then Texoma. Due to its location near the 100th longitude and a total of 8 remeasurements of this line as the border between Oklahoma and Texas, the place belonged at times to Texas and at times to Oklahoma again.

The post office was opened in 1901 and the railway reached the site in 1902. The highest level was reached in 1930 with almost 600 inhabitants. Today most of the houses are abandoned and Texola is almost a ghost town.
