Culter Fell Summit

Hiking

5.0

(14)

Straddling the county line between the Scottish Borders and South Lanarkshire, hikes up Culter Fell reward you with outstanding views of the South Uplands. This rounded, grassy mountain rises to 2,454 feet (748 m), making it higher than the surrounding tops and a fantastic objective for a day out in rolling hills.

There are myriad starting points from which to ascent Culter Fell, with plenty of opportunities to add in many surrounding tops too. Gathersnow Hill to the south is a popular addition while starting from Birthwood allows a direct ascent and descent, should you have little time on your hands.

The perfect spot for rambling about the Southern Uplands

One of many rolling, green hills in this area, Culter Fell is a very achievable hike throughout the year, with crisp winter days a lovely experience. Much of your hike will be across pathless, grassy terrain but both fences and the footsteps of hikers past keep it an easy ascent. Sheep graze across the fell so if you bring your trusty mountain dog, it’s best to keep it on a lead.

Culter Fell is prone to bogginess so waterproof boots will get you a long way while gaiters will come in handy in winter or after particularly wet weather. Winter often brings a dusting of snow but the fell remains hikable for most with steady feet and appropriate equipment. While summer offers verdant scenery, autumn and winter can be atmospheric, with grey skies and deep russet-coloured hills.

If the day is clear, good eyes will catch a glimpse of the distant Highlands and perhaps even the Lake District peaks. The wind can be strong across Culter Fell but it’s not hard to adjust your route to accommodate changing weather.

Biggar is the nearest settlement but you’ll find plenty of villages in the surroundings, complete with pubs and accommodation.
